"I Didn't Call You, Tequila Did" — And Other Reasons I Might Move to Tampa
There is a neon sign at Green Lemon that sums up my entire weekend in Tampa: "I Didn't Call You, Tequila Did."
As a New Yorker, I’m used to restaurants that take themselves very seriously. You know the type—the host looks at you like you’ve personally offended their ancestors by asking for a table, and the servers wear monochromatic linen and whisper the specials. It’s chic, but it’s cold.
Then I walked into Green Lemon in SoHo, and I realized: Oh, people actually have fun here.
The new snippet of info I found on their website says their mission is simple: "We are here to serve great food and have fun doing it... and that starts with our energy!"
And you can feel it. Here is why the energy at Green Lemon is the ultimate palate cleanser for a cynical New Yorker.
The Anti-Snob Service
In NYC, "engaging staff" usually means they deign to make eye contact with you. At Green Lemon, the staff is the heartbeat of the room. They are moving fast, dodging trays of tacos, and shouting over the music, but they are smiling. Real smiles, not customer-service grimaces.
Their website mentions they strive for an environment where "motivated people can flourish," and it shows. The bartender isn't just pouring a drink; they are hosting a mini-show. The server isn't just dropping off food; they are hyping up your choice of the Crispy Trees.
It’s a vibe that says, "We are at a party, and you just happened to get invited."
Strong Margaritas, Stronger Vibes
The tagline at the bottom of their menu says it all: "Green Lemon is a Mexican restaurant, serving strong margaritas and fresh Mexican-inspired street fare."
Emphasis on the strong.
When you combine a staff that is genuinely having a good time with 24oz "Margaronas," the result is electric. It creates a feedback loop. The staff has high energy, so the guests get rowdy (in a good way), which pumps up the staff even more. It’s the kind of chaos that feels curated and safe, but wild enough to be memorable.
The "Connection" Factor
I read that they believe their success "blossoms through the connection of our engaging staff and guests."
That sounds like corporate speak until you actually sit there. I watched a table of locals high-five their waiter like they were old college roommates. I watched a bartender dance while shaking a cocktail. It’s communal. You aren't just a cover number on a spreadsheet; you’re part of the ecosystem for the night.
The Verdict
I came for the food (and yes, the Street Trio is still living rent-free in my head). But I stayed for the slogan.
"I Didn't Call You, Tequila Did" isn't just a funny quote on the wall; it’s the ethos of the place. It allows you to let your guard down, blame the tequila, and just enjoy the moment.
If you are visiting Tampa, go to Green Lemon. Not just because the tacos are fresh and the drinks are strong, but because it is rare to find a place where the people working there seem to love it just as much as the people eating there.
Rating: 10/10 Good Vibes Only.
(P.S. They are hiring. If this blog doesn't work out, catch me slinging margaritas in SoHo.)
